TEACHING PHILOSOPHY (abridged)

During my years in institutional education spaces, I worked with students on improving their critical thinking skills, challenging their assumptions, and applying course material to their lives. It was imperative for me to foster a learning environment where students felt comfortable expressing their opinions and sharing their experiences, while also respecting the opinions and experiences of others. Filtering in current events, pop culture, and various forms of art, in addition to academic journals, news articles, and videos encouraged participation and an appreciation for growing one’s expertise. My facilitation method proved to be effective and was reflected in students’ attendance, preparation for class, efforts on assignments, and decisions to major in corresponding disciplines.

I continue to build from my early lessons in formal education and am now well versed at forging collaborative learning spaces outside of the classroom. We are all at different points on our lifelong journeys, so it is important to meet people where they are, especially since education must be an ongoing practice for anyone engaging in movement work. With this in mind, I have designed professional development curriculum for colleagues and people I supervise, and continue to facilitate learning spaces for movement and community leaders to learn how or gain new tools to help organize their communities and engage in intersectional movement practices.
